Along with firefighting duties, the Emergency Medical Services of the Manoa Fire Company provide a crucial role in keeping the residents of Havertown and the surrounding communities safe. We do this by staffing two Pennsylvania state-certified Basic Life Support Ambulances 24 hours a day, in conjunction with EMTs from the Haverford Township Paramedic Department. The ambulances are fully stocked with the latest life-saving equipment, and our personnel undergo constant training to stay sharp on old skills and to pick up new ones. The most recent addition to Manoa EMS came in late 2009, when the Haverford Township Paramedic Department (Medic 108) moved their primary Advanced Life Support response units into our firehouse. This move allowed the Medics more room to spread out and store equipment, and it gave the members of Manoa the ability to interact and learn from the staff’s advanced knowledge.

The history of EMS at Manoa is notable. The Company was one of the first firehouses in Delaware County to begin running ambulance services. In 1945, the Manoa Fire Company purchased a Studebaker ambulance from Episcopal Hospital. At the time, Manoa’s ambulance covered all of Haverford Township, as well as all of Marple and Newtown Townships. The old Studebaker was in service for years, before being replaced by several Cadillac and van-style ambulances over the following decades. The mid-80s brought the first box style ambulance to the station, and in the mid-1990s we added a second ambulance to our fleet. Since that time, Manoa has run two ambulances. The trucks responded to almost 1800 calls in 2009, a number which has been increasing over the years and one that we predict will only continue to rise.
